4 Part Summary Part 1: Around the 3 million years ago the cougars were believed to have been isolated with each other due to a mountain being destroyed. When the cougars were moved to the western side of the mountain they encountered many predators and became prey. The cougar population decreased and cougars went through a directional selection. Part 2: Due to the killings of cougars, the animals themselves had to evolve in order to survive. In present the present, a deer migration forced them to evolve. Male cougars are very overprotective over their territories and refuse to let in other male cougars. This divided the cougars into Southern and Northern cougars. Part 3: The northern cougars evolved into having very fast reflexes because they did not want to be killed off. Although naturally this cougar would have survived it did not because of all the hunting that was done and the bounties put on their heads. This led them to become extinct. Part 4: The southern cougars evolved to have brown coloring. This helped them hide and blend in with the desert areas. It also helped them hunt better.
